Board Meeting – Friends of UW Men’s Crew, Inc.
Tuesday, September 6, 2005 @ 7:00AM
in the Porter Boathouse Conference Room

Attending: Fred Robertson, Dan Chin, Pete Giese and Brad Taylor; absent – Don Tipple. Coach Chris Clark attended by conference phone while traveling to Milwaukee for a Milwaukee River Challenge organizing meeting.

Secretary Taylor called the meeting to order at 7:05 AM. Minutes of the June 6, 2005 were unanimously approved.

COACH’S REPORT: Coach Clark gave a report of the freshman class recruited from SOAR this summer. About 120 rowers came to the last week’s freshman introduction to rowing at UW. Though still early, Coach Clark is generally pleased with the quantity and quality of the freshman turnout, after a determined effort at SOAR to interest registrants in coming out for crew.An estimated 5 eights will be boated with varsity rowers when their practices starts September 13.

Four (4) Badger rowers participated in the Worlds in Gifu, Japan last week. Stroke Beau Hoopman (’02) and bowman Paul Daniels (’02) won gold in the men’s eight; Hoopman (3-seat) was 5th in the 4- and stroke Micah Boyd (’03) and still-eligible coxswain Chase Phillips (’07) won the bronze in the coxed pair.

After hearing Cal had established a training table for their varsity rowers, further investigation revealed 24 varsity rowers, all on some level – partial or full – scholarship, attend the training table during the winter
and spring semesters. This count excludes however many Cal frosh are on scholarships. Noting the Pac-10’s motion to make men’s crew a regulated sport by the NCAA (a vote is expected in June of ’06), the Board and Coach Clark agreed bringing Wisconsin and the Big Ten behind this motion was a growing priority. The matter should be brought to the attention of both Athletic Board Chair Walter Dickey as well as Assistant Athletic Department John Chadima, who succeeds the departing Cheryl Bailey with responsibility for men’s rowing.

ADMINSTRATIVE: On August 17, the IRS acknowledged our application for 501(c)(3) status and should act by year end. Steve White (’89) prepared the application for Friends – many thanks, Steve.
